minimum basic monthly scale of $70. Provision has been made for acting pay for the Senior Assistant Auditor and one Assistant Auditor in anticipation of the retirement during the year of the present holder of the post of Auditor. The ineroase is 89,744.

Other Charges

Upkeep of Motor Vehicles ($750) and Newspapers and Periodicals ($120) are now provided for departmentally. Fuel, Light and Power (1,200) and Uniforms (700) were omitted from the 1946/47 Estimatos and were provided for by Special warrants. Cleaning of Offices (120) is now shown separately. Ront of Offices covers a twelve month period and Travelling Expenses show a reduction of $200 over the combined provisions last year.

Head 4. Charitable Services

The grant to the Babies Home, Fanling, has been increased to $5,000 in view of the valuable work being carried out by that Institution.

The grant to the Leper Asylum at Shcklung has been increased by $49,000 as this Institution cannot continue to maintain lepers from Hong Kong at the present rate of $1.00 per head per day. It has been necessary to increase the maintenance allowance to $55.00 per head per month and provision has been made for an increased number of lepers.

Sub-head 17, "Magistratos Poor Box" is self- balancing and receipts are expected to reach the figure of $15,000. No provision has been included for passages and relief of destitutes as this will be provided for under the Relief Vote and to some extent undor"Magistrates Poor Box".

The grant to the Mercantile Marine Assistance Fund has been reduced by $5,000 as the sum of $10,000 is considered sufficient to meet probable requirements. The net increase on the whole Hoad is $35,115.
